Thought I'd share a picture of a couple of Holley Dominators that happen to be in our shop. They're destined to sit on top of a 10-71 blower which will sit on top of a 355 small block Chevy. I don't know much more about the build, but I hear it's for a street rod.

Carbs.. on top of the blower?

Sounds like a lot of air for a tiny Chevy, but very cool!

Not sure if sarcastic or curious,

Its the old school way, the old huffer blowers have carbs that sit on top.

I'm not too bloody awful familiar with non-fuel-injected forced-induction, but I am confused / concerned about compressing the a/f mixture...

Could you explain a thing?

It sure is. I'm guessing the thing will redline into 5 digits.

a 10-71 seems like a huge blower for a 350. Most of the time its 6-71s. That pair or carbs looks like way too much cfm even for a blower motor especially a small block. Our 468 Big block with a 8-71 had a pair of 600s

having nostalgia feels.

ok im done now.

fat 4barrels were always parked on top of the trucks i worked on a drove for my self and work back when i was a young stud.

never did master getting them to work well, that dark magic was left to the grizzled and surly warlocks in the shop.

These old roots style blowers are built as wet units. They are designed as draw through setups. It's also important to note that roots style blowers do not compress air like a turbocharger, centrifugal blower or twin screw blower does. The rotors move air to the lower intake manifold where it compresses against the closed intake valves. It's one of the reasons that adiabatic efficiency of these units is so poor compared to the previous mentioned power adders.

With that said, that's a hell of a lot of blower and carbueration for a 355! Although I should ask what the rated CFM on the units are before I state that for truth.

your carbs sit on top of a roots style blower the carb sucks air and adds the fuel at the top and then flows into the blower where its forced into the motor.

Think, a terminator cobra with the throttle body and injectors mover to the top of the blower.

I had the same "yeah riiight" conversation with the guy rebuilding the carbs. Once I know more about the specs, I'll post them up.

So this would be a "twin 4 bbl carb"? Because the whole "four barrel" business old dudes talk about between beer sips seems to make a hell of a lot more sense now that I've seen these twins all naked and open.

Yes exactly. 4 barrel carbs usually have 2 primary and 2 secondary barrels. The primary barrels are what you use for normal cruising and light acceleration. The secondary 2 barrels open up (via vacuum or mechanically ) when you punch it.

Dominators are a little different as all 4 barrels are the same size and (typically) all open up at the same rate via a linked mechanical , um , linkage.

Suck-through / draw through carbs. It's a legit setup. Usually done so you can swap carbs or easily tune them on the fly, I believe.

They are going to replace a carbon fiber alcohol injection system. You can't cruise too far on 8 gallons of alchohol apparently.
